BLACKBIRDS IN THE SPRING
BLACKBIRDS IN THE SPRING
In the Midwest, the blackbirds hang around for winter. In January, I sat and watched them with my dear grandmother. Flying from the roof, to the lawn, then to a tree, hundreds of them, all together at the same time. The experience was incredibly beautiful. I have never seen anything like that...only in Hitchcock's movie The Birds.
So I wanted to create a series based on my experience and I found all our old VHS tapes that we were about to recycle. I took it apart and found the shiny black film. I started cutting into strips and the film fell to the paint like a magnet. It was like a magical moment for me creatively and I knew it would express exactly what I wanted it to.
This has been a brutal winter and I am just looking forward to spring. I wanted to use a beautiful and vibrant turquoise blue to capture a fresh feeling. This painting is part of the Blackbirds VHS film series.
I used premium stretched and wrapped canvas (staples on back) acrylic paints and VHS film. A final varnish is applied protect the painting's surface from dust and UVA/UVB rays. This painting has a 1.5" black frame and is ready to hang. All paintings are signed and dated on the back.
